Summary: This UK study used data from the LOGIC-Q study which is part of a larger, longitudinal study to explore the experiences, in their own words, of young people referred to the National Specialist Gender Service, and their families. The authors used the interviews completed in the year June 2019 – July 2020 with 20 participants aged 11-15.

Two main themes emerged from the interviews; that of ‘Recognition’: Knowing without having the language and finding the words to explain who they are and where they fit in. Secondly, that of ‘Transition’: Outward presentation, labels/names, medical transition and puberty.

This paper highlights the important of understanding how personal and nuanced each individual’s experiences are. The authors use these findings to recommend safe and non-judgemental healthcare that is personalised to the individual rather than more generalised.
