Book: The Association between Depression and Suicidal Behaviour
Summary: This is a chapter in a book that explores our understanding of depression and suicide, focussing specifically on how parents and caregivers can support the healthy development of sexual and gender diverse (SGD) young people. The author specifically applies a social-emotional learning perspective, which is the process of understanding our own thoughts and emotions, developing healthy relationships, and making responsible decisions.
The chapter goes on to describe practical ways in which parents and caregivers can implement this in their home environment with SGD young people. These include things such as talking with the young person openly and honestly, taking the time to listen and understand what the young person’s gender identity means to them, providing support if the SGD young person experiences discrimination or bullying, and respecting the young person’s decision making and including them in decisions about their own lives.
The author recommends that parents and caregivers seek out educational resources as well as reach out to other parents and caregivers of SGD young people to better understand SGD identities and develop the tools to support their young person through their journey.
