Summary: This American commentary outlines the need for gender affirming care (GAC) for Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth, and highlights that its effectiveness is supported by the literature. Over the past 5 years there has been escalating anti-TGD legislation within the US which has had a negative impact on the mental health of TGD youth.

The authors argue that critiques of GAC are often based on unsound research methodology and cherry-picked data and should not form the basis for policy. The authors note that as with all areas of health, the research is constantly developing and there is a need for ongoing research in this area to ensure best practice care for TGD.
